Guiding ourselves into the Green Zone
Apr 03, 2025
I frequently draw inspiration from Jeremy Hunter and his ground-breaking work on the Red, Green, and Grey Zones.
In our sessions, we shift the focus for leaders from merely “managing stress” to discovering how to consistently guide themselves and their teams into the Green Zone.
🔍 Here’s the concept:
Our nervous system operates in three zones:
🔴 Red Zone: Attack, defend, avoid, or escape.
🔘 Grey Zone: Freeze, shut down, or burnout.
✅ Green Zone: Engage, adapt, connect, and thrive—a state of coherence and resilience.
Our nervous system transitions through these zones automatically in response to internal and external stimuli, often without our conscious awareness. This is part of the natural fight, flight, or freeze response.
But here’s the powerful part: through intentional practice, we can expand our Green Zone—the space where we feel energized, calm, and flexible, and where collaboration, curiosity, and trust flourish.
In our sessions, we explore what we call the “inner game” of the nervous system, asking:
- What triggers the Red Zone for me?
- How can I create more space for the Green Zone in my day-to-day life?
When individuals and teams spend more time in the Green Zone, everything changes:
💡 Trust deepens.
💡 Collaboration improves.
💡 People are willing to take risks and share their intelligence.
As @JeremyHunter puts it, “When you take care of people, help them feel safe, and empower them to take action, amazing things can happen.”
